Why Choose Foxglove Decor

Right Tools and Materials

Pebbledash needs long-pile masonry rollers and thick masonry paint — not the same kit as a smooth render job.

Thorough Preparation

We treat moss and algae properly before painting, not paint over it and hope for the best.

Fully Insured

Full public liability cover on every pebbledash painting job.

Local Experience

Sunderland’s 1930s and 1950s semis across Ashbrooke, Hylton Castle, and Farrington are our regular territory.

How Pebbledash Is Painted

Pebble dash is not painted the same way as smooth masonry. The stones and pebbles create a large surface area with deep crevices. Standard rollers skim across the surface and leave unpainted recesses — these become the weak point where paint fails first.

We use long-pile masonry rollers to force paint into the textured surface, then work it in further with a brush where needed. Two coats are standard. Each coat uses more paint per square metre than a smooth surface, and this is included in our quoted price.

Preparation: Washing and Treating the Surface

Preparation is the most important stage. Dirt, salt deposits, and organic material trapped in the pebbles prevent adhesion if not removed before painting.

We pressure wash all pebbledash surfaces before work begins. On north-facing walls, moss and algae are often present. We apply a mould treatment to kill biological growth. Any paint applied over biological growth will lift within months.

Pebbledash Repairs Before Painting

Pebbles become detached over time, particularly on older properties. Areas where stones have come away leave exposed render that needs filling before painting — otherwise the patchy texture shows through the finish.

Foxglove Decor identifies repair areas during the survey and includes minor repairs in the standard service. Significant areas of missing pebbledash are assessed and quoted separately.

Partial Pebbledash: Upper Storey and Banded Elevations

Many Sunderland properties have pebbledash only on the upper half of the elevation, with smooth render or brick below. This is the standard pattern on 1930s semis across Ashbrooke, Hylton Castle, and Farrington.

Where pebbledash covers only part of the elevation, we quote for that section specifically, ensure clean lines where it meets the lower surface, and advise on colour coordination between the two finishes. For smooth rendered lower sections, see our render painting service.

How Pebbledash Painting Works

1. Survey and Assessment

We check the extent of pebbledash coverage, surface condition, biological growth, and any detached areas before quoting.

2. Pressure Washing

The full surface is pressure washed and left to dry. Clears dirt, salt deposits, and organic material from between the pebbles.

3. Mould Treatment

Biocide applied to any areas with moss, algae, or lichen growth. Kills existing organisms and inhibits regrowth for several years.

4. Repairs

Loose or missing pebbles and exposed render areas filled where needed. Significant areas of missing pebbledash are assessed and quoted separately.

5. Masking

Windows, doors, sills, and surrounding brickwork protected before painting begins.

6. First Coat

Thick masonry paint applied by long-pile roller and worked into the crevices with a brush.

7. Second Coat

Applied once the first coat is fully dry. Builds colour depth and surface protection.
