Wood Painting in Sunderland

Foxglove Decor are wood painters in Sunderland, specialising in interior hardwood, exterior timber, and bespoke joinery across Tyne & Wear.
Internal timber features in interwar semis across Penshaw and Washington often show flaking paint from incompatible products. Interior Hardwood Painting
Internal doors, skirting boards, architraves, and built-in features in interwar and Victorian homes have often been coated with incompatible products over decades. Oil gloss followed by water-based gloss — or trade satinwood applied over chalky old finishes — are the most common combinations.
Sound finishes are deglossed to create a key for new paint. Flaking surfaces are stripped back to bare wood. The correct primer is applied: oil-based if applying oil topcoat, water-based bonding primer if using water-based satinwood.
Exterior Timber Restoration
Timber fascias, soffits, garden gates, and external trim in coastal properties face salt air exposure and frost damage. Foxglove Decor treat exterior timber restoration in Sunderland coastal properties with additional primer stages.
Preparation is thorough: stripping where paint adhesion is poor, sanding smooth, and priming with oil-based wood primer. Two topcoats of exterior gloss or satinwood provide durable finish.
Stain and Varnish Applications
Some hardwood features are finished with stain and varnish rather than paint, bringing out natural timber colour and grain. We assess the wood condition, strip to bare timber if needed, and sand to the appropriate grit.
We then apply stain in your chosen colour and finish with varnish or sealant appropriate for interior or exterior use.
Stripping and Bare Wood Preparation
Stripped hardwood requires careful handling before finishing. Sanding sequence (coarse to fine grit) is critical. Bare wood is primed immediately to prevent moisture absorption.
We use appropriate primers and finishes for the timber type and location. For door painting as part of a larger interior project, see our door painting page.

Our Wood Painting Process
1. Assessment
We visit and assess the timber features — paint condition, adhesion, any rot or damage, and desired finish (paint, stain, or varnish). You receive a detailed quote.
2. Surface Assessment
Paint adhesion is tested. Flaking or poorly adhering paint is flagged for stripping. Sound paint is flagged for deglossing.
3. Stripping or Deglossing
Flaking paint is stripped to bare wood using appropriate methods. Sound paint is sanded to create a key for the new finish.
4. Repair
Any soft wood or rot is treated with wood hardener or patched with exterior filler. Bare wood is sanded smooth.
5. Priming
Oil-based primer is applied to bare timber if an oil topcoat will follow. Water-based bonding primer is used if water-based topcoat will follow.
6. Finish Coats
Multiple thin coats are applied rather than one heavy coat. Drying time between coats is observed. Sanding between coats ensures adhesion.
7. Inspection
All surfaces checked for drips, missed spots, brush marks, and consistency. Touch-ups completed before final walkthrough.

Wood Painting Costs in Sunderland
Prices below are estimates only. Every timber feature is different. Call 0191 743 6008 for a precise quote.

Paint Adhesion and Condition
Good adhesion (sound paint) costs less than flaking or poorly adhering paint requiring stripping. A three-bed house with all internal doors, skirting, and stair balustrade: £900-1,400 for degloss and prime, or £1,200-1,800 with full stripping.
Extent of Timber
Painting a single door costs less than an entire room’s skirting, architraves, built-in shelving, and multiple doors. Exterior timber only (fascia, soffits, gates, approximately 30-40m²): £800-1,400.
Rot or Damage
Sound timber costs less than wood requiring treatment, repair, or specialist joinery work, which is quoted separately. For window frame painting in timber, see our window frame painting page. For full interior decoration, see our interior painters page.
Interwar semis in Penshaw and Washington often have multiple painted timber elements from previous poorly specified finishes. Getting a good overall finish requires consistency across all elements — primer matching, finish coat selection, and careful drying time between coats.
